Relics of Brittany's past
This spectacular Roman remnant is from Fanum Martis (Shrine of Mars) at Haut Becherel in Côtes d’Armor. It dates from the 1st century CE, part of a huge temple complex covering a hectare of land on this high point, with the impressive lay-out rather ostentatiously preserved. This octagonal cella was once 22m high and designed to be seen from far and wide. The central courtyard on the site is 250x200m, once surrounded by porticoes flanking a whole series of dressing-rooms, cult statues and reception areas. This was the religious centre for the town of Corseul nearby, situated on a major Roman road running along the valley. What an imposing sight for passing travellers!
