I’m with you on rationing words. As a people-pleasing blurter this is what I need. Can you save leftover words from the previous day? Pile them up for special occasions? I’d love to be somewhere and be unable to speak because I’d run out of my stash.

Never come to Birmingham Wendy - never silent here even in the dead of night!

Loved this: "a painful awareness of how an illegal tipping site must feel, buried under the detritus of others." Beautiful. x

Brilliant post.I share a love of silence with my youngest daughter -- when she walked the Camino she started out at 4 am each day -- partly to avoid the worst of the heat, partly to avoid being spoken to. She also wore earphones permanently so it looked like she was busy listening to something, though she had nothing playing -- just an extra way to dissuade people from interrupting her silence. I can do chunks of time in the thick of life as long as I can regularly drop into my own trance (or oblivion) where I find I can just shut it all out and do periodic times alone in silence when I feel my rhythm drifting -- rhythm feels so key.
